NPI Licensing in Temporal Clauses
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper offers a systematic approach to NPI licensing in temporal clauses based on a uniform analysis of temporal connectives as relations between times and relying on appropriate type shifting for compositional buildup. The quantificational force commonly associated with temporal connectives is attributed to the operators earliest and max operating on the temporal clause and effecting the necessary type-lowering for a connective to compose with a clause. An implication about the truth of a temporal clause with any kind of temporal connective is a semantic presupposition due to a definedness condition associated with earliest and max. Based on Beaver & Condoravdi (2003, in progress), I show that veridical and non-veridical before induces a reversal in specificity ordering when combined with a temporal clause, and so does after when construed with max. I then show that the exceptional NPI licensing in until and since clauses is due to a reversal in specificity ordering induced after the composition of these clauses with main clauses of a particular kind. Crucial throughout is the more restricted, presupposition-dependent notion of entailment, Strawson-entailment, proposed by von Fintel (1999).

Superlative Degree Clauses: Evidence from Npi Licensing Superlative Degree Clauses: Evidence from Npi Licensing
This paper concerns itself with the superlative morpheme -est and its ability to license Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) such as any or ever, and in particular the compositional analysis of a puzzling type of utterance which incorporates these grammatical elements. Specifically, an embedded clause structure which appears at first glance to be a restrictive relative clause modifier will be argued...
متن کاملTense in Adjuncts Part 2: Temporal Adverbial Clauses
1. RECAPITULATION Part I of this article treats tense in relative clauses (RCs) in English, Russian and Japanese. The temporal centre in RCs can always be Tproi, and sometimes it has to be Tproi. 1. In SOT languages such as English, the Tense in the RC is bound in RC\wollconfigurations, i.e., we find a Tproi bound by woll. The licensing of the morphological tense in the RC is non-local in these...
متن کاملFive Types of Affective Contexts: Nonmonotonic NPI Licensers
1. Introduction In this paper, I show that there exist five-not only three-types of affective contexts which license negative polarity items (NPIs). There are two classes of nonmonotonic NPI licensers – stable and unstable-in addition to three kinds of downward entailing (DE) licensers that Zwarts (1993,1998) points out. The existence of covert 'only' is the key to NPI licensing by the unstable...
متن کاملNPI Licensing , Strawson Entailment , and Context Dependency KAI
The Fauconnier-Ladusaw analysis of negative polarity licensing (that NPIs are licensed in the scope of downward entailing operators) continues to be the benchmark theory of negative polarity. In this paper, I consider some of the moves that are needed to maintain its basic intuition in some recalcitrant arenas: negative polarity licensing by only, adversatives, superlatives, and conditionals. W...
متن کاملIllusory licensing effects across dependency types: ERP evidence.
A number of recent studies have argued that grammatical illusions can arise in the process of completing linguistic dependencies, such that unlicensed material is temporarily treated as licensed due to the presence of a potential licensor that is semantically appropriate but in a syntactically inappropriate position. A frequently studied case involves illusory licensing of negative polarity ite...
